Superheroes and princesses flock to Wilbury Hall!
Wilbury Hall was a hive of activity on Friday, full of excited local children, including many who were dressed as their favourite superhero or princess. All had come along with a parent or carer to enjoy four hours of fun.
Sue Williams, Community Engagement Officer at First Garden Cities Homes, said: “Many local families have had to cut back on holiday activities and treats for their children because of the cost-of-living crisis, so we decided to brighten up the summer by hosting a fun-filled, free event for local children aged between four and 12.
“We are very grateful to North Herts Council and Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation for co-funding the event, and to St Thomas Church for letting us use Wilbury Hall free of charge.”
Jodie Collingbourne attended with son Elliott, 10. She said: “Honestly, it’s probably one of the most fun days we’ve had for the whole of the summer. It’s also great to have somewhere to socialise with other adults. I haven’t really got to see many people during the holidays, so it’s been good for me as well to come here. Just to speak to other adults and get out of the house has actually been a really nice change.
Nadine Mullins, who brought her four children along, said: “This event is amazing, especially the fact that there’s so much variety. During the summer holidays, you want lots of things to do with your children, but it can cost so much. You can take them to the park for free, but it all adds up in the end, so having this family fun day for free is absolutely wonderful. I’m so glad we came across it.”
The arts and crafts activities were a massive hit with six-year-old Kyah, who said: “I made a Spiderman picture from scratch!” For Finleigh-Jacob Watts, aged five, the best activity was painting a plaster mould of a superhero.
The street dance session delivered by dance company The Little Performers was a massive hit. The children quickly learned the routines and got into the groove on the dance floor, displaying boundless energy, originality and flair!
Alastair Stewart, Head of Charitable Projects and Partnerships at the Foundation, said: “The Fun Day has enabled a number of local families to come together and enjoy various fun arts and craft activities. The event also provided an opportunity for families to find out more about local organisations such as the Best Before Café and North Herts Family Centre.
“Judging by all the smiling faces and the buzz in the hall, the day was a very well received. Well done First Garden Cities Homes for organising such a successful event.”
